The
State Chair has only ever been used by the Monarch or the Monarch's
representative who, in the State of Victoria, is the Governor. The State
Chair is made of gilded wood with barley twist side columns and an arched
back rail surmounted by a crown. The arms terminate in lion heads and
the chair is upholstered in turquoise velvet. "Advance Victoria" is
carved on the gilded back of the chair.
Government House's clear, monochrome exterior hides within it a room of variegated splendour. The impression, apart from spaciousness, is of colour and intricate designs in blue, ivory and burnished gold. An ivory and turquoise frieze in imitation of Wedgwood china encircles the room. The peacock blue plush on dais, draperies and furnishings adds a further touch of richness to the room.
