Government House Open Day 2013 was a great success thanks to the many and hard working volunteers involved and to the some 17,000 people who viewed the House and Grounds and joined in the many activities on offer throughout the day.

Role of the Governor
The role of the Governor is to represent the Queen as Head of State in Victoria and includes constitutional, ceremonial, and community functions. The Governor is responsible for safeguarding the Victorian Constitution, facilitating democratic processes and encouraging community cohesion in the State of Victoria.

Garden and Grounds
Government House sits amongst 11 majestic hectares of gardens and grounds in the centre of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne. Joseph Sayce's original garden designs of 1873 remain intact, with additional improvements undertaken by the Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, William Guilfoyle.

Government House
Government House, completed in 1876, was designed by William Wardell and JJ Clarke to be the official residence of the Governor of Victoria and a place for holding State occasions. The Governor's standard is flown from the top of the house's tower when the Governor is in the State of Victoria.

Government House Tours
The National Trust hold tours of the State Apartments and selected outbuildings of Government House Victoria.
Combined tours of LaTrobe's Cottage and Government House are conducted on Monday and Thursday mornings throughout the year.
