Introduction

The Governor and Mr Howard hosted the final Investiture Ceremony for the recipients of awards in the Order of Australia for the Australia Day 2022 Honours List.

Last week, the Governor and Mr Howard hosted the first two investitures for Victorians recognised in the Australia Day Honours list for the Order of Australia for their contributions to our community. The final investiture for these awards was today held at Government House. 

Among those recognised as Members of the Order of Australia were Caroline Walker AM, for significant service to the community through domestic violence, sexual assault and health promotion initiatives, and Victoria Police’s Wendy Steendam AM, for significant service to the community through emergency response organisations.  

Lucy Stephan OAM and Rosemary Popa OAM each received the Medal of the Order of Australia for their service to sport, in recognition of their achievement winning Gold Medals in the women’s coxless four at the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020. 

Others recognised at today’s ceremony included Mr Benedict Soler OAM for service to the Maltese community, Mrs Lynette Wareen OAM for her service to the Indigenous community of Bendigo, and Mr Hardy Chi-Fong Shum OAM, for his service to the Chinese community in Manningham.   

Ms Shantelle Thompson OAM of Mildura was also presented with a Medal of the Order of Australia for service to the Indigenous community of Victoria, through a range of roles including community roles as a member of the Woor-Dugin Management Committee, as a motivational speaker with the Korin Gamadji Institute, and a sporting career including as the 2016 Oceania wrestling champion. 

The late David Renton OAM was recognised for his service to surf lifesaving. His medal was accepted by his wife, Mrs Lorraine Renton.
