Ahead of International Women’s Day on Monday, this week the Vice Regal program included many calls, visits and functions to celebrate the vast and important contribution of women in all facets of society.
At the beginning of the week, the Governor received the courtesy call of Wing Commander Caroline Godfrey, who was appointed Commanding Officer of the Number 21 Squadron (City of Melbourne) in December 2020. No. 21 Squadron was formed on 20 April 1936, with the aim of providing an air defence capability for Melbourne, and successive Victorian Governors have been Honorary Air Commodore of the City of Melbourne Squadron since its formation.
The Order of Australia investiture program continued this week, with a number of Victorians honored in the Queen’s Birthday 2020 list receiving their award from the Governor at a ceremony at Government House. Among the recipients present were Mrs Ekaterina Danova OAM, recognised for her service to broadcast and print media, and to the Russian community, Associate Professor Cecily Freemantle OAM, for her service to medical research, particularly in relation to population health and Ms Amara Hamid OAM, for her service to women and the multicultural community. Once again, the investitures showed the range of service and generosity that can be found across Victoria. As part of the Governor’s focus on women in the lead up to International Women’s Day, on Friday the Governor hosted a roundtable event at Government House, where representatives from a range of industries, business and other organisations spoke about the particular contribution of women during 2020, and their plans for 2021.
