School children from Sunshine camped out in tents at Government House this week as part of a program that encourages them to lead active lives and to have the confidence to try new experiences.
Thirty tents plus a central tepee were set up on the Main Lawn, in what is believed to be the first camp out held at Government House, to mark the 30th anniversary of health promotion by VicHealth.
The overnight camp was hosted by the Hon. Linda Dessau AM, Governor of Victoria, who is Patron-In-Chief of VicHealth, and her husband, Mr Anthony Howard QC.
The focus of the camp for the grade 5 and 6 children from Sunshine North Primary School was on fitness, fun and healthy eating. YMCA Victoria, which runs youth groups at the school to expose the students to new experiences, helped organise the camp and its activities.
The Governor and Mr Howard met the students and participated in outdoor activities with them. The following morning, the students were taken on a tour of the State Apartments by Mr Howard.
The Governor said she was delighted to support VicHealth and to host the youngsters at Government House.
“It was wonderful to see them enjoying health-focussed games and activities in the garden. We hope that they will always enjoy the memory of a night camping on the lawn at Government House.”
