On 26 July 2025, Government House Victoria invites you to join us for our July Open Day as part of Open House Melbourne.
Guests once again can explore the historic State Apartments with a self-guided tour of one of Victoria’s most iconic buildings.
The theme of Open House Melbourne 2025 is ‘Stories of the City’, reflecting how every building, street and public place tells a unique story.
Built between 1872 and 1876, Government House is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and is recognised for having historical, architectural and aesthetic significance to the State.
The building is almost 150 years old – with those years representing countless events that have taken place, and people who have worked and lived, within its walls.
It was home to Australia’s first Governor-General and played a key role during the formative decades of our federation as a nation.
The ballroom is bigger than that at Buckingham Palace and was a depot for volunteers supporting troops overseas during World War 1.
Visitors will have the chance to learn more about the original design of the House and how it has changed over time.
The Open Day will also feature musical performances, and historical furniture displays courtesy of the Johnston Collection.
Entry is free, with gates opening at 10.00am and closing at 3:00pm. Please note that Government House Victoria is only open on Saturday 26 July.
