I begin by acknowledging the Traditional Owners of the land on which we are gathered – the Gunditjmara people – and pay my respects to their Elders, past and present.

It is a pleasure to join you all here.

Governors of Victoria have had a longstanding association with the equine industry, and I’m pleased to be able to continue this connection today.

There was once a time that horses were kept in the stables at Government House, and these regional tours were conducted with a horse and carriage – although the latter is long past.

Many former Governors were avid horse riders, although I’m more comfortable admiring from the stands, than from the saddle.

While the proportion of those who are familiar with the fundamentals of riding has reduced over time, it is clear a passionate community still thrives.

Last month, I had the honour of hosting Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal – someone who is well known for her love of and skill in riding.

Her Royal Highness was a member of the British eventing team for many years, and competed in the 1976 Olympics in the equestrian three-day event.

She is also Patron of Riding for the Disabled and the World Horse Welfare charity.

Last month, when delivering the closing address at the World Horse Welfare Annual Conference, The Princess Royal made the observation of horses that:

“…most horses have the choice not to do what you want to do because they’re bigger and stronger than you are…”

Her reflection speaks to a simple truth at the heart of horse riding.

It is, in essence, a partnership.

It is a partnership based on mutual trust, confidence and understanding.

Yet to build this relationship, you need to have the spaces to foster those connections and hone the necessary skills.

The building we are opening today is more than a building – it is a space where students and community members can do just that.

For some, it may spark a passion for riding that will last a lifetime.

Others may leave their riding days behind, but gain newfound skills and self-assurance – which is equally important.

I’d like to congratulate all those who have made this facility possible.

Today’s ceremony is testament to your vision and your determination to make it a reality.

In particular, I’d like to acknowledge the generosity and foresight of Don Hearn.

This facility is a tribute to a loved one and memory is valuable as their legacy contributes to a new future.

From a loss has sprung this facility that will have a deeply positive influence on so many in the years to come.

While we mark its official opening today, what we really celebrate is the benefit this place will have for all those who have the opportunity to use it.

You should all be just as proud of that as you are of the arena itself.

Thank you.
